One day, I called my driver and asked him to pick me up from the office. I came downstairs from the office and saw that there was a minor accident involving a saloon car and a motorcycle. A young boy was driving the car, with his mother sitting beside him. The motorcycle rider appeared to be an ordinary boy from the neighboring lower middle-class area.
The car driver was yelling at him, indicating that the motorcycle had collided with his car. The boy’s mother was urging him to forgive the motorcycle rider. In response, he said, “Mom, it seems like we are the ones who are always expected to forgive. Why don’t they forgive us?” After some argument, the mother left the motorcycle rider, and the conversation ended. However, her son remained dissatisfied.
Both the mother and son went into a nearby shop. I was still waiting there for the car. After two or three minutes, they both came back from the shop, and I asked them if I could speak to the boy, using an excuse. They approached me, and I said, “You just had an accident, and your mother was advising you to forgive him, while you were questioning why you should forgive them and why they don’t forgive us.” The boy interrupted, saying, “Yes, we are always expected to forgive, and we are the ones who suffer the loss.”
I continued, “I want to explain to you why you should forgive them and why they don’t forgive you.” He responded, “Yes, why?” I explained, “Compare yourself with that boy and consider whose mercy is greater. Who has been blessed by Allah with good parents and upbringing? Who has had the privilege of receiving higher education? Who is happier? And many other aspects, think about it for yourself. If you evaluate yourself and him, you’ll realize that he has nothing compared to you. Allah has given you everything, so tell me, who should give? Who will have more, and who will have less?” Therefore, whenever you have an argument with someone weaker than you, you should let it go. You should forgive them. In fact, this is an act of kindness as well.” His mother said, “Look, son, this is exactly what I meant when I was trying to explain it to you.”
